This one simple intention will help you excel in any field

Hi! A huge welcome to you from wherever you're watching in the world.

I'm Bec Sands. I help you pivot to a successful career that transforms your life, your community and the world, either in a career you love or a business you own.

Whether you’re working for yourself or someone else, you need entrepreneurial skills in today’s world. Having had a corporate career and now as a business owner, I will teach you both.

Today I am discussing the one simple intention that you can set that will help you excel in any field. This is exactly what I did to get to a leadership position in my corporate career and I’m now using it in my freelance coaching and consulting business.

The intention is simply to be the best in your field at what you do.

Now, this may seem completely obvious, however not many people focus on this. Instead, we’re more likely to focus on, and worry about, what’s going wrong than on what could go right. When I work with my coaching clients on this concept it is instrumental in their career and business growth.

Let’s break down what it means to be the best in your field at what you do, and dive into it a little bit more.

1.      You show up like a pro.

Showing up like a pro, or a professional, can mean many things, but have a think about what  it means in your field. It may mean finding a way to get great results no matter what. Turning up no matter what. Putting in the hours every day, every night and on the weekend if required. Dealing with the difficult situations with a smile. Staying calm amidst chaos. Coming up with new ideas and trying again when things don’t work.

 2.      You take care of yourself so that you can keep showing up like a pro.

Burning out means that you won’t be able to keep showing up like a pro, so your emotional, mental and physical health needs to be a priority. You guys know that I love yoga, meditation, swimming, running, group training… I find that when I work out every day it keeps me on my A-game.

 3.      You under-promise and over-deliver.

I have used this technique throughout my entire career and it is always refreshing for my clients and colleagues. It amazes me how many people promise something and don’t deliver. If you can set an expectation, then exceed it, it’s the simplest way to gain trust and also respect for the work that you do.

 4.      You become a leader in your business or role.

Even if you don’t have any employees or direct reports right now, you can still lead yourself, your business and others and be someone that people look to for inspiration.

5.      You support and be of service to those around you.

As well as delivering your own objectives, to be the best in your field at what you do you must also serve others. This could include being a mentor for someone looking to grow their careers or businesses; providing introductions so that people can network with those relevant in their field; or simply showing that you’re there to support others.

By setting the intention to be the best in your field at what you do, your behaviours will start to change and your mind will start to look for ways that you can excel at what you do. You will start to show up with more purpose, clarity and excellence.

For those of you in Sydney, I’m hosting a goal-setting workshop in person on Saturday, 11 January (note that this date has changed from 7 Dec since recording the video!) to set you up for an incredible 2020.
