Are you waiting for your dream career or business to come to you?
Hi! A huge welcome to you from wherever you're watching in the world.
I'm Bec Sands. I help you pivot to a successful career that transforms your life, your community and the world, either in a career you love or a business you own. Because starting a business isn’t for everyone – but neither is a job!
Whether you’re working for yourself or someone else, you need entrepreneurial skills in today’s world. Having had a corporate career and now as a business owner, I will teach you both.
Today I am talking about something that I did for a REALLY long time –
Waiting for your dream career or business to come to you!
If this is you, and you’ve been waiting for the ‘right time’ to take action, or for permission to go for what you want, I hear you and completely understand where you’re coming from.
After all, we’ve all heard the phrase ‘good things come to those who wait’, right?!
Well, patience may be a virtue, but in business or in your career it can hold you back.
You’ve absolutely got to put your time in and gain experience in order to get to senior levels in your career and develop your business, but if you wait around for someone to give you a plan, or promote you, or tell you what the next step is for you, you will be waiting for a LONG time.
Although there are proven principles to follow and it is KEY to get support to help you move forward, ultimately it is up to you to seek out this support and then make decisions based on what is best for you. The trick is to take action.
In business, the magic happens in the unknown – in what hasn’t been invented or created yet. It’s up to YOU to create it. This may sound scary, but honestly, a career and working for someone else is EXACTLY the same – you just have less autonomy and less control over who you’re working with and what you get to work on.
In your career, businesses don’t actually SEEK to promote you because then they’ll have to pay you more. At the end of the day, businesses are about revenue. What businesses need to see from you is the VALUE you bring to the business in dollar form (because at the end of the day, that’s really all businesses understand). Then, when you can prove that in the form of a business case, you can put yourself forward for a promotion.
No one cares about your career or business like you do.
No one is invested in your career or business like you are.
It’s your responsibility and it’s YOUR decision what next action you take.
If you’re not being proactive, ask yourself why?
Usually there’s a story that keeps us stuck. This could be any number of things, from:
• I don’t have time
• I’m not worthy/deserving
• I can’t because I may not succeed
• I don’t like change
• I need security
OR
• What if…
o I fail
o I succeed
o I don’t earn money
o I earn so much money that I become an asshole
o I have even less time than now
o Something bad happens
o People judge me or criticise what I’m doing
The fact is, whether you’re in a career or you’re in a business, there is no such thing as control or security.
Instead of focusing on staying safe and secure, which is completely impossible and a fantasy no matter what you’re doing in life (well, unless you’re literally staying in your comfort zone and doing nothing to grow, stretch or improve), here’s what I recommend.
Get comfortable with the unknown and embrace change.
Realise that there’s no such thing as a specific roadmap that you can follow. Instead, take the next step and you’ll figure it out as you go along.
2. Get passionate about something.
Is there a problem in the world that really frustrates you? Or is there something that you love so much that you’d do it for free? Get passionate about it. Give it some attention.
3. Create a plan.
Once you know what you’re passionate about, create a plan to move forward. This could be in your business or career. One of my clients is super passionate about becoming a leader in content marketing, but was feeling frustrated because there seemed to be only roadblocks in the company she was at – she wasn’t given the opportunity to improve her skills or take on a leadership position, and she was stretched too thin with what she was doing day to day. Working together she decided that she’d taken all of the action she could in the role she was in, and she secured a dedicated content marketing leadership role in another company and is over the moon! THIS is an example of what it is to take control of your career and create a plan for now and the future of the direction you want your career to go in.
4. TAKE ACTION.
Until you take action, you’re just thinking about taking action, which can cause paralysis by analysis. Let’s take an example of exercise. You can THINK about going to the gym, but until you take action to actually get off the couch and work out, you’re not going to see results. You’ll never know in advance without a doubt the outcome of the next step you take, but if you have the right intention and create a vision for where you want to go you WILL get there with inspired action.
That's it from me today! Thanks so much for watching and make sure you’re subscribed to my free weekly emails for more tips on how to pivot your career, find clarity and make a great income doing what you love at becsands.com. Have a great day!
