My favourite books for your career pivot
My career has evolved MASSIVELY since completing a degree in media at Macquarie University in 2007. I started off in PR agencies for five years, then moved in-house into corporate for seven years where I was most recently head of PR for Australia at a global property firm.
While in corporate, (on the side) I first created a successful lifestyle blog called Daily Inspiration Board, then took an online business course (Marie Forleo's B School), became a certified coach with the Beautiful You Coaching Academy (you can find out more about my experience with the course here), and worked with my own coach (Naomi Arnold) to launch my Career Pivot Coaching and Freelance PR Consulting business which I now work in successfully full-time. (Completely online, so I work from wherever).
Along the way, I have pivoted many times until I found my true calling; I've done a LOT of courses and have read many books. My education never stops and every day I continue to learn.
I wanted to share some of my favourite books with you in the hope that these resources will help to support you as well! These will be relevant for your next career pivot and all areas of your life.
Here’s just a few of my favourite books to support you in your next career pivot and across all areas of your life (in no particular order!)
Winging It, by Emma Isaacs. Emma is the Founder and CEO of Business Chicks, and an incredibly successful entrepreneur. I loved reading this because it highlighted how you can’t wait for confidence to kick in and for a pretty plan with a complete picture - you need to take action now if you want to bring something to life. Including your next career pivot!
Simple Soulful Sacred, by Megan Dalla-Camina. Megan is a women’s mentor, writer, speaker and entrepreneur. I loved reading this book because it discusses the importance of coming back to simplicity and carving out space in the craziness of everyday life; particularly if you’re looking to achieve big things and live with passion, purpose and power. This book is a must-read for every woman.
Mastering Your Mean Girl, by Melissa Ambrosini. Melissa is an author, speaker, content creator and entrepreneur. You know that mean voice in your head that tells you you’re not smart enough, thin enough, pretty enough, confident enough, talented enough, or too young, too old, too loud, too quiet..? That’s the voice Melissa calls our ‘mean girl’ and this book helps us to learn how to master her so that we can take action to build the life (or business, or career!) we truly want. I loved reading this because it helps you to gently close the door on all of those negative thoughts so that you can take inspired action (and realise that everyone has these thoughts - you’re not alone!). For a quick snapshot of Melissa’s message, check out her Ted talk.
Daring Greatly, by Brene Brown. Brene is a researcher, speaker and author and if you haven’t yet seen her Ted talk on the power of vulnerability, PLEASE go and do so now! In Daring Greatly, Brene dispels the cultural myth that vulnerability is weakness and argues that it is, in truth, our most accurate measure of courage. I loved reading this because it was a powerful message that we must put ourselves out there in the ways we feel called - despite feeling vulnerable.
Everything is Figureoutable, by Marie Forleo. Marie is an entrepreneur, writer, philanthropist and unshakeable optimist. I loved reading this book due to the life-changing idea that absolutely everything is figureoutable - whether you want to leave a dead end job, break an addiction, learn to dance, heal a relationship, grow a business, or anything else. Also check out Marie TV for some free inspiration if you’re looking to start an online business.
Get Rich, Lucky Bitch, by Denise Duffield-Thomas. Denise is a money mindset mentor for women (no, not a financial advisor!) and she helps you to release all of your blocks around money. I absolutely loved listening to this as an audiobook - Denise has such an approachable style and it’s like she’s talking just to you. This stuff truly works - her approach worked for me when I was in corporate, helping me to double my income, and I’m doing her Money Bootcamp right now for my business and it’s brilliant.
Strengthsfinder 2.0, by Tom Rath. Tom Rath is an author, researcher, and speaker. I loved reading this book and recommending it to my clients as it guides readers to identify their natural talents so that they can develop their strengths in order to do their best each day.
There are so many more - these are simply a snapshot! Sending you huge well-wishes on your next career pivot journey.
